(She was born into a culture that had some knowledge of Eu...)
She was born into a culture that had some knowledge of Europeans, and after settling on the outskirts of the territory controlled by her father, she was apparently drawn to these particular strangers. A number of the chroniclers of the Jamestown founding mention her by name and note her interactions with the English settlers. The Powhatan girl, who was reported to have saved John Smith from execution and to have enjoyed cartwheeling naked with the young boys of the Jamestown settlement, would as a young woman being kidnapped as a political pawn, converted to Christianity, married to a settler and taken to England as an example of the potential of the New World for cultural indoctrination. It was among members of her adopted nation that she took sick and died at age 22, as she attempted to return to her homeland. This study examines the historical evidence about Pocahontas and compares it to the mythology as recorded by artists and writers.

(Two Hundred Years after Henry "Lighthorse Harry" Lee's fu...)
Two Hundred Years after Henry "Lighthorse Harry" Lee's funeral oration for George Washington, the eloquence of his words "first in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen" has caused most Americans to forget the clause that followed in which Lee located Washington's character firmly in his private life. George Washington: The Man behind the Myths redresses this historical imbalance in our image of Washington by examining our conceptions and misconceptions about him through a fascinating collection of documents and images.

This is the story of Virginia as told through the work of landscape artists. Although landscape pictures are no foolproof guide to Virginia's history, they are historical documents that, carefully scrutinized, yield historical insights as much as written documents or archaeological evidence. The Virginia Landscape gives a unique view into the cultural history of Virginia, as depicted by landscape pictures over centuries.

(Remembrances of "Old Virginia" conjure intense pride, yet...)
Remembrances of "Old Virginia" conjure intense pride, yet are also rife with troubling contradictions. For the phrase includes both the impressive accomplishments of the Founding Fathers and Jamestown's ignoble beginnings; it encompasses plantation owners' dignified gentility, but also their dependence on the institution of slavery. With over 200 images, Old Virginia: The Pursuit of a Pastoral Ideal presents an unbiased survey of the history of this elusive term, disentangling myth from fact.

(Artist Andrei Kushnir's latest collection of landscapes a...)
Artist Andrei Kushnir's latest collection of landscapes awakens the senses for a journey through the seasons spent on an idyllic historic property, situated in the hunt country of the northern Virginia Piedmont. Visitors to Valley View Farm are entranced by the astounding peacefulness of the landscape; residents speak of a heartfelt sense of place and home that the property engenders. Kushnir captures their experiences - the sleepiness of winter, the newness of spring, the intensity of summer, and the crisp call of autumn - in paintings such as Evening in the Valley and Gardens of Plenty. His palette of inviting colors offers serenity and transforms the simple act of viewing into an engaging experience... like being on the farm.

(Generals Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee are two of th...)
Generals Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee are two of the most important, and heavily published about, figures in nineteenth-century American history, but despite the enormous amount of published material on the Civil War, including individual biographies of Lee and Grant, there is almost nothing that has been published which looks at these two figures together and which compares them over an extended period of time. This new, fully illustrated book is the first to provide a major re-assessment of their lives, careers and historical impact.

One hundred and fifty years ago, in October 1859, John Brown and his followers gained armed possession of the federal arsenal at Harper's Ferry, Virginia. In the immediate aftermath, many Americans denounced the raid as the act of a madman. Six weeks later, however, by the time he was hanged for murder, treason, and inciting slaves to revolt, many commentators in the North and in Europe revered Brown as a martyr who gave his life so that others might be free.

(The story of Virginia is at the center of the American ex...)
The story of Virginia is at the center of the American experience. World-changing, pivotal events of the nation have most often taken place in Virginia or been meaningfully shaped by Virginians. The ideas most cherished by Americans were oft inspired and contested in the state, with lasting consequence. The history of the “mother of states” and the “mother of presidents” is long, rich, and complex. While Virginians have offered ideas with lasting positive global impact, they also have engaged in tragic fights and have allowed unmistakable injustices. This book presents 400 evocative objects from Museum’s permanent exhibition, and from its impressive collection, chronologically and with a brief background. In a 200-page sampling of letters, documents, artefacts, paintings, furniture, silver, and other decorative objects, along with books, maps, prints, broadsides, guns, uniforms, period photographs, and utilitarian objects, a unique and lavishly illustrated history of Virginia is provided.
