William Roy Shelton was born on April 9, 1919, in Rutherfordton, North Carolina, United States.
Shelton began his career as an assistant professor of English at Rollins College. William Shelton also covered at least forty eight major United States rocket launches as Miami Bureau Chief for Time Inc. and later became bureau chief and space affairs correspondent for Time and Life magazines, as well as a contributing editor to the Saturday Evening Post.
He authored a series of books, mostly about space exploration, including Land of the Everglades (1958), Countdown: The Story of Cape Canaveral (1960), Flights of the Astronauts (1963), Man's Conquest of Space (1968) and Winning the Moon, published in 1970. He also released a novel, Stowaway to the Moon (1973) and a collection of poems, New Hope for the Dead, which appeared in 1977.
William R. Shelton is best known as the author of numerous books for children. Shelton contributed short stories and articles to popular magazines, including Atlantic, Fortune, Saturday Evening Post and Life. He also was a World War II hero.
Shelton received the Atlantic Monthly "First" Award in 1947 for his short story "The Snow Girl," and the O. Henry Prize Stories Award in 1948.
