William Tucker was born on June 2, 1942, in New York City, New York, United States.
Tucker received his education at Amherst College, graduating from it with a bachelor's degree in 1964. He also attended graduate studies at State University of New York at Buffalo from 1968 to 1970.
Tucker started his career as a reporter for Rockland Journal-News in 1971. Two years later, he started working for Bergen Evening Record and then for Rockland County Times.
In 1978, Tucker became a contributing editor for Harper's Magazine, the position he held till 1981. During the next thirty years, Tucker has worked for The American Spectator, National Review, the Weekly Standard, The New Republic, Reader’s Digest, Commentary, Life, Reason, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and other publications, and has been a regular columnist for the New York Post, the New York Press, and the New York Sun.
