"Khaki in a Long White Coat" offers a rare glimpse into the workings of a military hospital, describing the inefficiency of career medical officers in situations that often extend to the point of absurdity. Dr. Weiss points out that the armed forces are particularly susceptible to the problems that arise in large organizations where there is little incentive for cultivating professional efficacy, asserting. One can only wonder how we managed to win two World Wars unless our inefficiency was less than that of our enemies. If his assessment seems harsh to the casual observer, one needs only to read his account of the environment in which he served and the conditions he witnessed. While often producing humorous results, Dr. Weiss's experience also reflects on the inherent weaknesses of large organizations that discourage individual thought and initiative.
