James Gilbert Ryan is an American educator and writer. Currently, he is a Professor of History at Texas A&M University at Galveston.

James Gilbert Ryan was born on January 31, 1947 in Wilmington, Delaware, United States; the son of James Albert Urian, an apartment manager, and Audrey (Davis) Urian, an elementary schoolteacher.

Education

James Ryan studied at the University of Delaware, where he received a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts degrees. In 1975 he got a Master of Arts degree from the University of Notre Dame. James also holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree.

Career

James Ryan began his career as an adjunct assistant professor at Drexel University in 1982. In 1985, he served as a visiting assistant professor of history and politics. From 1985 to 1987, James was an adjunct assistant professor of political science at Temple University. For three years, he held the position of visiting assistant professor of political science at Muhlenberg College. In 1990, James was appointed an assistant professor at Texas A&M University at Galveston, becoming an associate professor of history in 1996. Since 2004, Ryan has been a Professor of History at Texas A&M University.

James Ryan is also a contributor of articles and reviews to academic journals, including the Historian, the Journal of Negro History and the Review of Politics. He wrote two books - Earl Browder: The Failure of American Communism and Historical Dictionary of the 1940s.
