Ordained to ministry Congregational Church, 1831. Pastor congregation, Cambridgeport, Massachusetts, until 1854. President Amherst (Massachusetts) College, 1854-1876, strengthened and enlarged curriculum.

Member Massachusetts Board Education. Trustee Phillips Academy, Andover Theological Seminary. Influential in counsels of America Board Commissioners for Foreign Missions.
