Commissioned Second lieutenant, United States Army, 1913, and advanced through the ranks to brigadier general, 1942, major general, August 18, 1942. Served in American Expeditionary Force, France, World War I. Commanding American parachute troops, 1941-1942.

Commanding airborne troops, 1942-1945. Retired 1945.
