William Henry Jordy was born on August 31, 1917, in Poughkeepsie, New York, United States. He was a son of Elwood Benjamin Jordy and Caroline May Jordy (maiden name Hill).
William Henry Jordy obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from Bard College in 1939. Three years later, he completed a postgraduate program at New York University's Institute of Fine Arts. In 1947, he received his Doctor of Philosophy degree from Yale University.
Later, he was given two honorary degrees, a Doctor of Humane Letters from Bard College in 1968, and a Doctor of Fine Arts from Rhode Island School of Design in 1993.
William Henry Jordy joined the staff of Yale University as an instructor in 1948 and eventually rose to the rank of assistant professor before heading to Brown University in 1955 in the same capacity. Five years later, he attained the position of professor of fine arts and served from 1963 to 1966 and 1976 to 1977 as department chair. He later became the Henry Ledyard Goddard Professor Emeritus of Art History at Brown.
During his lifetime he also served in the United States Army Infantry for three years. In addition, as a noted architectural historian, Jordy wrote about how European design influenced American architecture. He was also affiliated with Columbia University’s Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture.
In addition to writing for periodicals such as Architectural Review, William Henry Jordy authored and edited such books as ‘Henry Adams: Scientific Historian’, ‘Two volumes of American Buildings and Their Architects’, ‘Joseph Goto: Sculpture’ (with Joseph Goto), ‘Louis Sullivan: The Function of Ornament’ (with W. de Wit and David Zanten), and ‘Buildings on Paper: Rhode Island Architectural Drawings, 1825-1945’.
