(Taming the Great South Land is a profound new history of ...)
Taming the Great South Land is a profound new history of Australia. It tells the story of two centuries of European settlement from the point of view of the land and its indigenous people. Taming the Great South Land is a powerful and pioneering study and, in the tradition The Fatal Shore, is compelling reading. William Lines combines environmental, social and political history to record 200 years of implacable exploitation of nature. He traces how the Enlightenment ideas of progress, economic growth and development were transported to Australia and employed in the conquest of nature. From the early slaughter of seals, through land settlement and the gold rushes to British nuclear tests and the modern mining and timber industries, the results of the conquest are written on our landscape. They have been felt most keenly by the indigenous population of the continent. But this is not a uniquely Australian story: its pattern runs through the history of the developed countries of the world. Taming the Great South Land is an epic saga of the human impact on the Australian environment.

(Set against the magnificent backdrop of Australia's geolo...)
Set against the magnificent backdrop of Australia's geological, human, and natural history, An All Consuming Passion is the story of amateur botanist Georgiana Molloy. In 1829 she married a retired Army captain and emigrated from Scotland to the remote southwestern corner of Australia. William Lines weaves the story of Molloy's life and increasing commitment to botany with the broader story of colonial invasion. He uses Molloy's experience - known mostly through her prolific letters - to highlight issues such as gender inequality in colonial society, the British misunderstanding and abuse of Aboriginal culture, and the impact of Aborigines and colonists on the landscape of Australia.

(A Long Walk in the Australian Bush reveals at dose range ...)
A Long Walk in the Australian Bush reveals at dose range the devastation of the great temperate eucalypt forests while interweaving stories about forestry, mining, science, economics, conservation, and language, converging on the themes of nature, reality, objectivity, and understanding. A century of exploitation by politicians, loggers, and developers is described alongside personal experience and a strong sense of place. Lines contrasts the knowledge, wisdom, myths, and superstitions of the ancients - including the Greeks and the Nyungar, the original inhabitants of the western Australian forest - with contemporary human values. Extrapolating from his first-hand observations of ecological damage, he condemns the prevailing policies of extracting the maximum resource from nature, regardless of the cost. These policies are not unique to Australia. In fact, Lines writes, the approach to forestry that prevails in Western Australia has been borrowed from the United States Forest Service. With passion and immediacy, A Long Walk in the Australian Bush draws connections between the history, use, and abuse of Western Australia's forests and the use and abuse of the planet.

(That history, he believes, has been marked by a total dis...)
That history, he believes, has been marked by a total disregard for limits, and an arrogant belief in the desirability of progress and growth. The devastation wrought upon the Australian landscape by Europeans has dire consequences which will be felt far in the future. Lines expertly weaves into his picture the stories of his own family, beginning with his grandparents who emigrated to Australia early this century, and culminating in his own experience of the loss of an idyllic boyhood landscape to the onslaught of progress. The grand epic continually refers back to intimate, personal level, making this, above all, a very human story.
