(We spent 1976 in South Africa. We were unable to find all...)
We spent 1976 in South Africa. We were unable to find all the answers to all our questions about apartheid and its peoples, but we did discover many realities regarding South Africa's problems and its potentials. It is my aim to transmit those discoveries in the pages to come. The South Africans who invited us into their homes were not politicians or high-ranking officials. They were teachers, airline pilots, car salesmen, housewives, secretaries, executives, managers, maids, sportsmen, journalists, sculptors. As a result, much of this book fea- tures South Africans telling about themselves. I have tried to use their stories, my own observations, excerpts from books by South Africans about their country, and press reports to build the image of the Re- public we took with us after living there for a year. But this is not a diary, nor is it a chronological recitation of our daily routines, but rather it is description and reflection in which our personal experiences form the primary evidence. If this book helps you wriggle inside the enigma of South Africa, if it permits you to gain a greater understanding of the mystery, if it provides some answers for the riddle, it will have achieved its pur- pose.
