Coleman received a Bachelor in Economics with honors from the University of Sydney in 1981. He also gained a Doctor of Philosophy, from London School of Economics and Political Science in 1989.
Coleman was a tutorial fellow at the University of Exeter, Exeter, United Kingdom from 1987 till 1988. He worked as a lecturer at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand from 1988 till 1991. Then he was a senior lecturer at the University of Tasmania, Australia since 1991. Coleman is currently a reader at the Research School of Economics of the Australian National University. Coleman's areas of expertise include Economic History, Financial Economics, Macroeconomic Theory, Comparative Economic Systems, International Economics And International Finance, History Of Economic Thought, Economic Development And Growth. He is also the editor of "Agenda: a Journal of Policy Analysis and Reform".
Coleman is a past president of the History of Economic Thought Society of Australia.
