Kies, William Samuel was born on December 2, 1877 in Mapleton, Minnesota, United States. Son of Christian L. and Bertha A. (Steeps) Kies.

B.L., University of Wisconsin, 1899, Bachelor of Laws, 1901, Master of Arts (honorary), 1937.

Career

Trial attorney City of Chicago, 1903-1905. General attorney C.&N.-W. Railway, 1905-1910, acting as counsel in condemnation proceedings Chicago terminals of that road. General counsel Chicago & Western Indiana R.R. and Belt Railway Company of Chicago, 1910-1913.

Special counsel Chicago Park Commission and State treasurer of Illinois. Removed to New York, 1913, to organize foreign trade department of National City Bank of New York, and organized and directed foreign branch extensions in S. America. Vice president of the bank, September 1915-January 1918.

Vice president American International Corporation, 1916-1920. Organized, 1921, first Federal Foreign Banking Association, first Edge Bill bank in the United States, and was Chairman of the Board and Executive Committee. Organized W. S. Kies & Company, private bankers, 1925.

Has served on bds. of the United States Rubber Company, Industrial Alcohol Company, American Commercial Alcohol Corporation, New York Shipbuilding Company, Pacific Mail Company, Allied Machinery Company, Union Bag & Paper Corporation, Savage Arms Corporation. Now director and member Executive Committee, Bangor & Arostook Railroad Company, American Steel Export Company, W. Virginia Coal & Coke Corporation, Ohio River Company A Founder, trustee, and chairman investment committee, Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation. President Endowment Fund Trustee of Kappa Sigma.
