This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. Studied at Silcoates School, Wakefield. Apprentice, merchant’s office, Newcastle-on - Tyne, when 14.
Career
Editor of Northern Echo, Darlington, 1871-1880. Pall Mall Gazette, assistant, 1880-1883. Editor, 1883-1889; imprisoned for three months for the Maiden Tribute, 1885.
Founded Review of Reviews, 1890. American Review of Reviews, 1891. Australasian Review of Reviews, 1894.
Began Masterpiece Library of Penny Poets, Novels, and Prose Classics, 1895. Preached the Peace Crusade after visiting the Tsar in 1898, and founded and edited the weekly paper War against War. After the Hague Conference, which he attended, strongly opposed the war with the Transvaal, wrote Shall I Slay my Brother Boer, and published the weekly organ of Stop the War Committee, War against War in South Africa.
In 1900 proposed the formation of the Union International to combat Militarism and to secure the adoption of the recommendations of the Hague Conference. Began in same year publication of portfolios of pictorial masterpieces. Editor of the Review of Reviews and Masterpiece Library.
