He began architectural training in New York, and later was employed as a draftsman in some of the larger offices in the city until 1880.
During the eighties Mr. Marean left the east to establish residence in Denver, and shortly after joined the office of the late F. E. Edbrooke with whom he practiced until 1895. As partners they designed several important buildings in Denver, including the Brown Palace Hotel, dating from 1892; Interstate Trust Building, Central Presbyterian Church, 1892; a number of office buildings, and the Masonic Building, all standing at the time of Mr. Marean’s death. In 1895 he formed a partnership with Albert J. Norton (Marean & Norton) and continued through the following years to be identified with the design of a number of outstanding buildings in Denver. Among the most important of these were the Chamber of Commerce; Y. M. C. A. Building, 1907; Shirley Savoy Hotel, 1903; Sarah Platt Decker Library, 1917, and the Open Air Theatre at the Civic Center.
