Studied at Trinity College, Dublin. A first senior moderatorship and large gold medal in History and Political Science. Was auditor and gold medallist in oratory of the College Historical Society.

Called to Irish Bar and joined the Munster Circuit, 1881. Was Barrington Lecturer in Political Economy. Examiner in English under the Intermediate Education Board.
Appointed one of the Secretaries to the Royal Commission on Irish Public Works, 1886.
Became a Legal Assistant Commissioner under the Irish Land Acts, 1887. Foreign many years Secretary of the Statistical and Social Inquiry Society of Ireland, and was elected President of the Society, 1902. Professional Corporation Ireland, 1909; Estates Commissioner under the Irish Land Acting, 1903, and one of the Irish Land Commissioners.
Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. Member of the Royal Irish Academy. Clubs: Reform, Devonshire, Royal Societies.
