(Gz Ssis Translator s Note The translator, a great-grandda...)
Gz Ssis Translator s Note The translator, a great-granddaughter of the mathematician, wishes to call attention to the fact that the writer of this Memorial, Baron Wolfgang Sartorius von Walthershausen, Professor of Geology at the University of Gfottingen, wrote over one hundred years ago and immediately after the death of his long-cherished friend and colleague. This to some extent explains the extreme feeling and language of the Memorial. In the interests of clarity the somewhat archaic German has been given a very free rendering. In a personal letter to the translator, dated August 5, 1949, Dr. Albert Einstein wrote as follows: The importance of C. F. Gauss for the development of modern physical theory and especially for the mathematical fundament of the theory of relativity is overwhelming indeed; also his achievement of the system of absolute measurement in the field of electromagnetism. He was born at Gottingen, on the 17th of December 1809.
He was educated at the University of Göttingen where he devoted his attention to physical and natural science, and in particular to mineralogy.
During a tour in 1834-1835 Waltershausen carried out a series of magnetic observations in various parts of Europe. He then gave his attention to an exhaustive investigation of the volcano of Mount Etna, in Sicily, and carried on the work with some interruptions until 1843 including with Christian Heinrich Friedrich Peters.
The chief result of this undertaking was his great Atlas des Ätna (1858–1861), in which he distinguished the lava streams formed during the later centuries.
After his return from Mount Etna, Waltershausen visited Iceland, and subsequently published Physisch-geographische Skizze von Island (1847), Über die vulkanischen Gesteine in Sizilien und Island (1853), and Geologischer Atlas von Island (1853).
He died at Gottingen on the 16th of October 1876.
He was appointed professor of mineralogy and geology at Gottingen, and held this post for about thirty years, until his death. In 1866 he published an important essay entitled "Recherches sur les climats de Vepoque actuelle et des ipoques ancicnnes"; in this he expressed his belief that the Glacial period was due to changes in the configuration of the earth's surface.
