Appointed assistant engineer United States Navy, May 8, 1877. Promoted through grades to rear admiral, February 13, 1913. Made Arctic cruise on United States Ship Alliance, 1881, search of the Jeannette.

Served in Miantonomoh during Spanish-American War. Was fleet engineer Pacific Squadron on Flagship Iowa. Bureau of Steam Engineering, Navy Department, 1901-1908.

Head Department of Steam Engineering, Navy Yard, New York, 1908-1910. Member Naval Examining Board, Washington, 1910-1913. General inspector of machinery for Navy, July 11, 1913-September 8, 1920.

Retired September 8, 1920. Home: Philadelphia, Pa.
