Yahya Yakhlif

Background

Yahya Yakhlif was born in 1944 in the village of Samakh near Lake Tiberias in Palestine. He was forced to move to Jordan with his family in 1948.

Education

Yahya Yakhlif studied Arabic literature at the Arab University of Beirut.

Career

Yahya Yakhlif joined the Palestinian National Movement and became a prominent member of its National Council, and eventually the Minister of Culture in the Palestinian Authority.

Yakhlif has written several collections of short stories and a number of novels, including "Najran tahta al-sifr" in 1975. His "Buhayrah wara' al-rih" was written in 1997 and translated by May Jayyusi and Christopher Tingley as "A Lake beyond the Wind" in 1998.

Achievements

• Yahya Yakhlif is particularly known as the author of a number of books. His novel "Buhayrah wara' al-rih" was translated into English, "Ma' Al Sama" as "The Sky's Water" and was nominated for the International Prize for Arabic Fiction in 2009.
