In 1881-1884, a permanent employee of "Otechestvenny zapiski" ("Domestic notes"). After the closure of the "Domestic notes", Yakov Vasilevich joined the statistical Bureau of the St. Petersburg Zemstvo Council in June 1884.

Abramov's literary activity was linked to that part of the Russian intelligentsia, which, pushing aside social and political issues, considered the main task of modern Russian state life-energetic work to help the people. But it was not only the economic needs of the Russian commoner that interested the publicist. As you can see from the list of his articles, half of them are devoted to the split. In Russian dissenters, especially in followers of rationalist sects, Yakov Vasilevich saw people "seeking truth", rich people, however, somewhat painful idealism, but which, with a soft attitude to it, will not all go into mysticism and fanaticism, but, on the contrary, will pour into the people's body a stream of cheerful, active and creative mood.
