Career
Yamanouchi Toyoshig succeeded his father as Lord of Tosa Clan (Kochi Prefecture) in 1848. When the question of a successor to the Shogun came up he sided with Yoshinobu Hitotsubashi against Yoshitomi Tokugawa, Lord of Kii, who became the 14th Shogun with the name of Iemochi (1857).
Later he was punished by the Shogun for criticizing the latter's policy regarding the entry of foreigners into Japan. When the Shogun's prestige began to decline he sent Shojiro Goto, one of his retainers, to the Shogunate with the counsel to hand over the helm of the government to the Emperor.
After the Meiji Restoration (1868) he entered in the service of the new government and advocated the unification of the nation, while denouncing the attitude of the Satsuma and Choshii clans.
