Yasaburo Taniguchi

Background

Yasaburo Taniguchi was born in 1883 in Kagawa, Japan.

Education

He studied at Kumamoto Medical College in 1902 and passed the examination for medical practitioner at the age of 19. He went to Germany and Austria to study in 1913, and was conferred the degree of Doktor Medizin, but returned to Japan because of the war.

Career

Yasaburo Taniguchi served at the obstetrics and gynecology ward of Kumamoto Prefectural Hospital. At the age of 26 he was recognized for his ability by Nagao Taniguchi, a founder of Kumamoto Medical College who made him assistant professor.

He received his doctorate of medicine in Japan in 1916. He was a professor of Kumamoto Medical College and upon the death of his father-in-law, became president of the college. Before this succession (1917), he was elected to president of Medical Association in Kumamoto Prefecture; later he was president of Japan Medical Association (1945). He was elected to the Upper House in 1946. He turned over his college to the Kumamoto Prefecture following internal dissensions. He became president of Kurume University in 1953.

Achievements

• He was a creator of Kummoto Midwifery School in 1917, he contributed greatly to the training of midwives. His influence was extensive in Kumamoto medical circles. He has special merit for protection of mother and child care.
