Yata Soun graduated from Junior College Department of Waseda University with a degree in economics.
In 1915 joined the editorial staff of Hochi Shimbun (newspaper) and worked for 27 year. When the paper was bought by Yomiuri Shimbun, Yata Soun became a non-regular staff member of the latter newspaper.
His book Chushingura (Romance of Ako Clansmen) won him great popularity. Another of his romances based on the life of Hideyoshi Toyotomi ran for 10 years as a serial in a newspaper.
Yata Soun studied haiku poetry under Shiki Masaoka and for 30 years edited Nihon Haikukai (Japan Haiku Society) magazine. Among his other works are Edo-kara Tokyo-e (From Edo To Tokyo) and Shimizu Jirocho (See Shimizu Jirocho).
