From 1891 merchant seaman. Also worked as translator in customs office. Military service as helmsman in Russian Navy.
Deserted in Constantinople and did not return to Russia until 1916. Worked as seaman, helmsman, greaser and skipper on sailing ships, mainly in the Pacific. As skipper on small sailing vessels cruised between San Francisco and New Zealand archipelago.
1921 began to write; work printed in journals Krasnyy pot, Bor’ba mirov, Smena, Na vakhte, Molodaya gvardiya, et cetera Publ.Morskiye bryzgi (Sea Spray). Pod vsemi shirotami (In All Latitudes).
