Yorikuni Inoue was born in Edo (now Tokyo), the eldest son of Tamizo Inoue.
Earlier known as Jiro studied the Chinese classics under Yoshiaki Inuzuka (1844) and then waka poetry under a disciple of Kageki Kagawa. Began the study of Japanese classics under Atsutane Hirata (1861).
After the Restoration (1868) Yorikuni Inoue was appointed assistant professor at Daigaku (Predecessor of Tokyo University) and then official in charge of Chinese and Japanese medicine. Yorikuni Inoue founded Shinshiisha, a private school, in the suburbs of Tokyo and became teacher there (1871). Conferred a doctorate, Doctor of Letters (1905). Official in charge of Library Bureau and professor at Peers School (1908). Among his works are Yakuliin Shikimei (description of chemicals) and Kojihi-lcd (chronicle of ancient Japanese history).
