"Mesoscopic physics" refers to the physics of structures larger than a nanometer (one billionth of a meter) but smaller than a micrometer (one millionth of a meter). This size range is the stage on which the exciting new research on submicroscopic and electronic and mechanical devices is being done. This research often crosses the boundary between physics and engineering, since engineering such tiny electronic components (as many as one million transistors can be fitted onto a single chip) requires a firm grasp of quantum physics. Applications for the future may include such wonders as microscopic robot surgeons that will travel through the blood stream to repair clogged arteries; submicroscopic actuators and builders; and supercomputers that fit on the head of a pin.

Yoseph Imry is an Israeli Physicist. He is a recipient of the Landau prize, Tel Aviv, 1983, Weizmann prize, Tel Aviv, 1987, International Business Machines Corporation Company award for research International Business Machines Corporation Company, 1987, Humboldt Research award Humboldt, 1993. First lieutenant Israeli Defense Forces, 1961-1962. Fellow American Physical Society, European Academy Arts and Sciences; member Israeli Physical Society.
Education
Imry Yoseph got his first degree, Master of Science, at Hebrew University, Jerusalem, Israel, in 1961. And afterward received his second degree, Doctor of Philosophy, at Weizmann Institute, Rehovot, Israel, in 1966.
Career
He is best known for taking part in the foundation of mesoscopic physics This is a relatively new branch of condensed matter physics. lieutenant is concerned with how the behavior of systems whose size is in between microand macroscopic, crosses over between these two regimes. These systems can be handled and addressed by more or less usual macroscopic methods, but their behavior may still show quantum effects.
