In the year 1921 Yoshihiro Watanabe graduated from Tokyo University with a degree in engineering.
Career
Taught first as assistant professor and then as professor at Kyushu University (from 1927). He was appointed to present post as director of Kyushu University's Research Institute for Applied Mechanics (1948). He published numerous theses including some dealing with applied mechanical study of structure of ships. His researches on the whole has resulted in considerable improvement in structure of ships.

Yoshihiro Watanabe received Japan Academy Prize in1949 for "Study of Rolling of Ships" in which he showed the method for determining numerical values to be used in designing ships to secure safety and comfort of voyage.
