Yoshikane Fujiwara was born in 957. He was a son of Fujiwara no Koretada.

He served under Emperor Kazan before joining his brother Korenari, and the Emperor in becoming monks, in 986. He also prevented the Emperor from committing suicide following the death of his wife Tsune-ko.
Although his position was only Chunagon (Vice-Minister), he was more powerful than a Kampaku (Adviser to the Emperor). Upon the abdication of the emperor, he became a priest with the name of Goshin (later Gakushin) and lived in Anrakuji Temple on Mt. Hiei.
