He studied under Dotaku Meguro, a physician of the Chinese school. He studied Chinese pharmacology under Ransui Tamura.
He served a number of daimyo but resigned only after short periods of service because of his unbending character. He wrote many books.
He was said to have studied so hard his eyes were always red and swollen.
