Hsieh Yu-ming received his primary and middle school education in Westminster College, Quanzhou. He graduated from Peking University (now Yenching University) with Bachelor of Arts degree in 1917. Mr. Hsieh did a graduate study in America under fellowship granted by the Rockefeller Foundation in 1923-1925. He obtained Master of Arts degree from Columbia University in 1924 and Doctor of Philosophy from University of Chicago in 1926.
Mr. Hsieh was a teacher of science at Westminister College from 1917 till 1921. He served as an instructor of physics at Yenching University, Peking, in 1921-1923. Between 1926 and 1928 Hsieh Yu-ming acted as an assistant professor of physics at Yenching University. He was an assistant professor and chairman of physics department from 1928 to 1930. In 1930 he was appointed professor and chairman of physics department. During 1932-1934 he was absent on leave from Yenching University and Visiting Research Fellow at the California Institute of Technology. Mr. Hsieh worked as a professor of physics since 1934.
