Yu Ten was born in 1637 in Mutsu, Aomori, Japan.

Yu Ten became a priest at Zojoji Temple in Edo (now Tokyo) while still a child and mastered the tenets of Jodo Sect.
Yu Ten set forth on a tour of the provinces (1686) and then lived briefly in seclusion at Ushijima, Sagami (Kanagawa Prefecture) till he was appointed head priest of Daiganji Temple in Shimo-osa (Chiba Prefecture) by order of Shogun Tsunayoshi Tokugawa (1699).
The following year Yu Ten was granted the purple robe (the highest symbol of Buddhist priests). Later he was ordained 36th head priest of Zojoji Temple with the rank of Daisojo (archbishop). He was a most distinguished priest and famous throughout the country. Late in life he retired to Meguro, Eda , where his disciple Yukai later founded Yutenji Temple after him.
