Career
She was appointed an HHMI Investigator in 2013. In November 2013 she received a 5-year appointment as the James Playfair McMurrich Collegiate Professor of the Sciences at the University of Michigan Medical School. She is a 2011 MacArthur Fellow and a 2008 Searle Scholar.
She graduated from Kyoto University with a Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Biophysics, and was a postdoctoral fellow with Margaret T. Fuller at Stanford University from 2001 to 2006.
