1880 graduate Hydrographic Department, Saint St. Petersburg Naval Academy.
Career
From 1882 lecturer, Saint St. Petersburg Naval College. Foreign several years associate, Main Geophysical Observatory and Main Hydrographic Board. 1910-1930 professor, Saint St. Petersburg (Leningrad) Naval Academy.
1917-1931 president, Russian (Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics) Geographical Social. 1923-1927 led Black Sea oceanographic expedition. 1925-1939 correspondent member, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences.
1925-1940 professor, Leningrad University. Studied potential of Great Northern Sea Route. Supervised compilation of relief map of Russia.
Did topographical calculations for Asian Russia and measured the length of major rivers. Compiled numerous general and special maps and edited several well-known atlases. Correspondent or Honorary member of various for acad and society
The straits between the islands of Severnaya Zemlya, an island at the entrance of an inlet on the Ob’ River, an island in the Straits of Kara and other geographical features now bear his name.
