Kruglyak studied at High School № 49 in Kharkov from 1944 to 1954. In 1961, he earned his Ph.D. in quantum chemistry and mathematical modelling from Case Institute of Technology. In 1962, Yuriy was given a Ph.D. in quantum chemistry from Kharkiv State University (nowadays V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University). Also in 1969, he received a Doctor of Sciences degree in Physical Chemistry from the same university.
Kruglyak began his career as an associate professor and head of Quantum Chemistry Group at L. V. Pisarzhevsky Institute of Physical Chemistry in 1963. Eight years later he took a position of a professor and head of Department of Molecular Quantum Mechanics at Bogolyubov Institute for Theoretical Physics. Then in 1989, Yuriy became professor and a head of the department for molecular electronics at Odesa I. I. Mechnikov National University. Since 1998 he has been a professor emeritus at Odessa State Environmental University.
Kruglyak is a member of Odessa Physical Society, New York Academy of Sciences, International Society for Molecular Electronics and Biocomputing and Ukrainian Physical Society.
On August 19, 1958 Yuriy Kruglyak married Liliya Pavlovna Filatova, with whom he divorced in 1971. On March 1, 1972 he married Nataliya Efimovna Kruglyak-Radomyselskaya. He has three children.
