1918-1919 musical director, composer and conductor, Maly Drama Theater, Petrograd. 1919-1934 at Leningrad Academy Drama Theater (now Pushkin Theater). 1926-1930 also director, “Triton" Music Publ House.
1939-1940 instructor, from 1940 professor of composition, Moscow Conservatory. 1926-1930 chairman, Association of Modem Music. 1924-1932 bd member, Drama Union.
1932-1936 deputy chairman, Leningrad Soviet Composers’ Union. 1939-1948 member, Organization(s) Committee, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Composers’ Union. 1948-1952 bd member, from 1952 secretary, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Composers' Union.
1948 attended International Congress of Composers and Musicians, Prague, 1947 People's Artiste of Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. 1955 member, Soviet Committee for the Defense of Peace.
