Yury Mikhailovich worked as a journalist (Ioshkar Ola, 1953-1957), a newspaperman of "Literaturnaya Gazeta" (1957-1963), deputy editor of the newspaper "Izvestiya" (1966-1968). In 1968-1981, he was a consultant of the administration of the Union of Soviet Writers. In 1974-1992, he was the chief editor of the annual "Steps". His works have been published since 1949.
Oklyansky is the author of about 20 books, including "Trust" (Kuibyshev, 1959), "Noisy solitude" (Kuibyshev, 1965, 1969, 1982; Moscow, 1997), "Remaining in the shadow" (Moscow, 1987), "An affair with a tyrant" (Moscow, 1994), "The harem of Bertolt Brecht" (Moscow, 1997).
