Yutaka Tatsuno was a distinguished sportsman while at First Higher School. He graduated from Law Department of Tokyo University (1913). Also graduated from French Literature Course of same university (1916).
He specialized in French literature at Postgraduate University Institute. From 1918 was instructor at Keio University and Waseda University, became assistant professor at Tokyo University (1921). Dispatched to Europe (1921) by the Education Ministry. Translated "Cyrano de Bergerac'" together with Shintaro Suzuki. Wrote numerous essays and regarded as doyen of the French literary world in Japan.
