Yves Chatel was born in 1885 Rennes, Franche-Comte, France.
Yves Chatel was educated locally.
Chatel was visiting Vichy when the Allies landed in North Africa on 8 Nov 1942. Rushing back to Algiers and urging resistance, he changed sides during the night of 10-11 Nov and became a member of Darlan’s Imperial Council. As a civilian functionary Chatel opposed the council’s domination by military officers, so when time came to replace Darlan, he first nominated the Comte de Paris (Bourbon pretender). Next proposing Peyrouton, he finally went along with Giraud's election. But Chatel was replaced on the council by Peyrouton on 19 Jan 1943 and not immediately given new duties. Finally sent to Lisbon, he was retired in Oct 1943. Chatel died 13 Oct 1944 while waiting to appear before the High Court of Justice, which dropped charges posthumously on 2 May 1945. (Larousse.)
