Thundy was born on September 28, 1936 in Changanacherry, Kerala, India; the son of Joseph Joseph Thundy and Mary Joseph Thundy. He came to the United States in 1964.

Thundy was born on September 28, 1936 in Changanacherry, Kerala, India; the son of Joseph Joseph Thundy and Mary Joseph Thundy. He came to the United States in 1964.
Thundy received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Pontificium Athenaeum in Pune (nowadays Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas) in 1958. Four years later he earned his Bachelor of Theology degree and Master of Theology degree from the same university. In 1965, Zacharias was given a Master of Arts degree from DePaul University. Also in 1968, he received a Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame.
Thundy began his career as an instructor at Dharmaram College in 1963 and had held the position for a year. In 1968, he took the position of an assistant professor in the English Department at Northern Michigan University. Then in 1972, Zacharias was appointed an associate professor at the same university. In 1976, he became a professor at Northern Michigan University, where he worked until his retirement in 2001.
Thundy is a member of Modern Language Association, Michigan Academy, Medieval Academy and Modern Language Society.
On December 15, 1983 Zacharias Thundy married Gina Marie. They have two children.
