Zdenek Thomas was born on the 11th of May 1929, in Opava, Silesia, Czech Republic; the son of Alois Kovalcik and Matylda Thomasova.

In 1954 Zdenek Thomas graduated from the Technology University of Brno with a Master of Arts degree in Civil Engineering. He received a degree of Doctor of Philosophy from the Technology University of Brno in 1967. Also in 1992 Zdenek Thomas graduated from the University of Prague with a Doctor of Science degree.
Zdenek served in the Army of Czech Republic from 1954-1956. From 1954-1991 he worked as a Researcher at Water Research Institute (nowadays T. G. Masaryk Water Research Institute), Prague and the Chief of watercourses section, 1963-1968 and also from 1969-1991 he held a position of a science worker at the same university. He retired in 1991. From 1968-1969 Z. Thomas was a Visiting researcher at Hydraulic Laboratory, Delft, The Netherlands. He was a Visiting scientist at the University of Stuttgard, Germany, 1989 and Mexican Institute of Petroleum, since 1999. Zdenek Thomas worked as a Science worker at Czech Academy of Sciences, Prague, 1992.
He is a member of Science-Technology Society in Prague, the Union of Czech Mathematicians and Physicians and Czech Society for Chemical Technology.
Zdenek is married to Jitka Kadlecova on the 31th of July 1954 and has a son.
