Zoë Buckman is a British artist, photographer, and producer. Her photos, sculptures, installations, and embroidery touch upon such topics as equality, feminism, mortality, and cultural norms.
Background
Zoë Buckman was born on September 13, 1985, in London, United Kingdom. She is a daughter of Nick Blatchley, a government health official, and Jennie Buckman, a TV writer, playwright, and formerly head of acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts.
Zoë has two siblings, brothers Michael and Joshua. Alec Guinness's wife was the sister of Buckman’s paternal grandmother.
Education
Zoë Buckman received a degree in general studies at the International Center of Photography in 2009.
Zoë Buckman served as a waitress and performed Beyle in the 1999 dramatic mystery movie ‘Simon Magus’ to earn her living at the begging of her career. As an artist, she has produced five series of works each of which is a specific reaction on the issues and events of modern life.
The debut series, ‘Present Life’ appeared after the birth of Buckman’s daughter Cleo in 2011. Using her own plastinated placenta as the material for the artifacts, Buckman explored temporality and beauty of life in the series.
The main idea of the ‘Every Curve’ that followed was the conflict between the feminist movement and hip-hop. The artist used the extracts from the 1990s rap lyrics in a form of embroidery on vintage women's lingerie to examine the topic.
The motifs of feminism were central to a couple of next series, ‘Mostly It’s Just Uncomfortable’ and ‘Let Her Rave’ although the media was different. When the first developed a theme of women’s struggles for the freedom of their body through gynecological tools and boxing imagery, the second used the combination of vintage wedding dresses and boxing gloves as the symbols for the influence of domestic violence on womanhood.
As a member of the For Freedoms platform, Buckman has been involved in several projects of the organization. The Exhibition at Jack Shainman, New York City, a bus bench with Monique Meloche Gallery, and a political campaign advertisement for W Magazine featuring Jemima Kirke are among such collaborations.
Buckman has exhibited throughout the United States and Europe, including the shows at Paul Kasmin Gallery in New York City, Goodman Gallery in South Africa, the National Center for Civil and Human Rights in Atlanta, and the National Museum of African-American History & Culture in Washington, D.C.
Nowadays, Zoë Buckman lives and works in the Brooklyn neighborhood of New York City. The artist’s recent series of works is entitled ‘Heavy Rag’.
