Hanaoka Zuiken studied Chinese medicine under Nangai Yoshimasu and surgery under Kenryu Yamato. Later he studied in Nagasaki and advocated fusion of Occidental and Chinese medicine. Introduced revolutionary changes in the traditional surgery of Japan.
Hanaoka Zuiken was a surgeon, who cured many difficult diseases including cancer of the breast. He became a physician in ordinary to the Lord of Kii and wrote some 70 books on medicine and surgery.
