Abdel studied at the University of Khartoum, where he received Bachelor of Science (with honors) and Master of Science in 1983. After that he earned Doctor of Philosophy at Charles University in 1991.
Abdel Sidahmed started his career in 1985 as a senior reporter and sub-editor for current affairs at Sudanow in Khartoum, Sudan, and holds that position till now. Moreover, he held the position of a researcher and lecturer in modern Middle Eastern history at Cambridge University in England in 1991 - 1995. Since 1995 Abdel works also as a human rights researcher specializing in the Middle East at Amnesty International in London, and serves as a consultant to Sudan Studies Centre.
