Alan Douglas Chalmers

Background

Mr. Chalmers was born in Southend-on-Sea, United Kingdom, on April 5, 1957. He is a son of James A. (a family physician) and Dorothy H. (a homemaker; maiden name, Anderson) Chalmers.

Education

Alan Chalmers graduated from University of Sheffield, receiving his Bachelor of Arts (with honors) in 1979. In 1990 he finished his studies at University of Southern California and got Doctor of Philosophy.

Career

Mr. Douglas worked at University of Southern California, Los Angeles, holding the position of an assistant lecturer from 1981 to 1990. He also served at University of Oregon, Eugene, as a visiting assistant professor of English during the period of 1990-1991. Between 1991 and 1996 Mr. Chalamers was appointed assistant professor at University of South Carolina at Spartanburg. Since 1996 he served as an associate professor of English at the university.

Until 1993 he worked as a commentator. In all, he filed stories from more than fifty countries. Toward the end of his career, he served as narrator of Baseball, a nine-part documentary created by Ken Burns. Mr. Douglas contributed to the book Memo to JFK from NBC News, and wrote NBC Radio’s The Chancellor Report from 1970 to 1982.
