Quotations:
"Sheer curiosity impels me to write — a desire to know the answers about historical events and the people who bring them about. I am not conscious of major external influences on my work, apart from the lasting impression made by my doctoral supervisor, Professor Alan Martin, who taught me the need for clarity, brevity and precision in writing."
"I read widely among my sources, carefully catalogued, mull the resultant ideas in my mind endlessly, then sit down and write. I set myself a minimum target of a thousand words per day, keep going until that’s achieved and write only one draft. Only minor corrections follow."
Powell is a charter member of the Rotary Club of Darwin Sunrise. Also, he is a member of the Royal Australian Historical Society and Historical Society of the Northern Territory (member of council).
Alan married Wendy Powell in 1972. The couple divorced in 1990. Later, he had a relationship with Jan Moore. Also, Alan is a father of three children — Jenny Powell Walker, Russell and Myfanwy.
