Sheehy was born on June 21, 1951 in Hampton, Australia; the son of Thomas A. Sheehy and Enid G. (Chamberlain) Sheehy.
Sheehy received a Bachelor of Applied Science degree from the University of Canberra in 1977. Twelve years later he earned his Master of Applied Science degree from the University of Technology.
Sheely began his career as a technical assistant at Monash University, Melbourne in 1970. Two years later he took a position of a research assistant at Melbourne University. In 1974, Alan became a medical scientist at ACT Health Services. Then he worked as a lecturer and senior lecturer at the University of Canbera from 1979 to 1995.
In 1995, Sheely was appointed a professor of microbiology at the University of Canberra and held it for two years. In addition, he served as a dean at the University of the Sunshine Coast in 1996-2001. Since 2002 Sheely has been a principal teacher at RMIT University.
Sheehy is a member of Australian Institute of Medical Scientists, Australian Society for Microbiology and Australian Biotechnology Association.
On September 26, 1987 Alan Sheehy married Tania E. Jacobini. They have 2 children.
