This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

It is usually Geography that determines the direction of History. Do we still teach History and Geography in the United States? Here we have a fascinating account of the history of the East Coast of the U.S as it pertains to moving westward from the coast through the Appalachian Mountains. As the title suggests, first there was wilderness, then rugged trails, roads, and finally railroads. ― This illustrated eBook edition of the 1907 original has been carefully edited for scanning and spelling errors, and is as true to the original as possible. The original spellings of the period have been left intact. Those who complain that OCR creates errors simply have not taken the time to read and edit every word as we have. EDB Pubs

(Geography in theE lementary Schools. For many years geogr...)
Geography in theE lementary Schools. For many years geography has held an honored place mour elementary schools. In most of these schools some part of each school day for a period of several years is devoted to its study. During this time the children are expected to learn about their own country in some detail and less fully about other parts of the earth. On the whole, the fact that the subject has held so prominent a place in school work for so long a time may be taken as evidence of a widespread belief that children ought to know something about the world in which-they live. It can hardly be expected that, in these days of educational experiments, the place and value of this subject would go unchallenged. A few years ago some educational authorities became very critical of the amount of time devoted to it. A few even went so far as to suggest that the study of geography be given up or that it be limited to 6ne or two years in the lower grades of the elementary school. For the greater part, however, criticism of geography as now taught in our schools has not been so destructive and sweeping, and has had to do chiefly with the kind and amount of subject matter taught and with the methods of teaching. (Excerpt from Essentials of Geography, Vol. 1 The derange...)
Excerpt from Essentials of Geography, Vol. 1 The derangement of industry caused by the recent war, great though it is, must be re garded as a temporary interruption of normal conditions. It is therefore thought best, in describing the industries of each country, to emphasize conditions as they are in normal times. The aim is to present matters of permanent importance rather than those of passing interest. In the division of the United States into groups of states, the books conform to the arrangement of the United States Census. This grouping has the soundest geographical, economic, and historical basis; and is in harmony with current usage in newspapers and periodicals. (The author made his first and long deferred visit to Cape...)
The author made his first and long deferred visit to Cape Cod in the summer of 19 15. There on the highlands of Truro, with their superb air, marvelous views and the freedom of untramrrieled nature, the Cape cast its spell upon him. Fugitive excursions on the upper parts of the great foreland revealed to him its variety of beauty and its significant history sent him to libraries where loving annalists had written what they knew and felt about the land of their fathers. Old as the Old Colony is in the story of America, it is not well known, and even those who visit it have small means of understanding its hills, lakes and shorelines. Thoreau saw but a small part of the Cape, and that in a remote time when its physical evolution was unknown and the human unfolding lacked the stages of the last half century. Other writers have touched the life and lore of special places, leaving room, it would seem, for a study on broader lines, and savoring a little more of the order which a student of science would try to give it.

(Geology Library PREFACE IN preparing this volume for seco...)
Geology Library PREFACE IN preparing this volume for secondary schools the author has made an elementary treatise, and has avoided technical discussions and terms so far as seemed consistent with the purposes of definite instruction. This is especially true in Part III, whose object is not the identification of horizons or species, but to give a general understanding of the progress of life and of the growth of the lands. But it has not been thought necessary to write condescendingly or in a juvenile style for students of high-school age. The great unsolved problems of the science of geology have been frankly stated, and interested students will, it is hoped, find glimpses of the vast regions that lie beyond the field of a brief exposition. Students will find it useful to have done some work in zoology and botany. For those who have not this preparation for Part III, the competent teacher may give the supplementary explanations that are needed. The order of treatment is deliberately chosen, and will not be found to differ in essentials from that employed in several earlier text-books. The phenomena of weathering and the various activities of water fall at once under the eye of most students. In the authors experience it has been found best to use at the outset the familiar interest thus aroused, thus leading on to more remote themes. Other text-books have been freely consulted, and record is here made of more especial indebtedness toD ana, Geikie, andS (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) ( About the Book The Americas were settled by people migr...)
About the Book The Americas were settled by people migrating from Asia at the height of an Ice Age 15,000 years ago. There was no contact with Europeans until Vikings appeared briefly in the 10th century, and the voyages of Christopher Columbus from 1492. America's Indigenous peoples were the Paleo-Indians, who were initially hunter-gatherers. Post 1492, Spanish, Portuguese and later English, French and Dutch colonialists arrived, conquering and settling the discovered lands over three centuries, from the early 16th to the early 19th centuries. The United States achieved independence from England in 1776, while Brazil and the larger Hispanic American nations declared independence in the 19th century. Canada became a federal dominion in 1867. About us Leopold Classic Library has the goal of making available to readers the classic books that have been out of print for decades. Albert Perry Brigham was born in Perry, New York, the only son and third child of Horace A. and Julia (Perry) Brigham. He was descended from Thomas Brigham who settled in Cambridge, Massachussets, in 1635.
Albert Brigham attended school in his native town, where, amid the varied and striking features of the Genesee Valley, his early interest in geology was aroused. In 1879 he received the degree of A. B. from Madison (now Colgate) University and in 1882 he was granted the degree of A. M. by the same university.
During his pastorate in the Tabernacle Church of Utica, in the summer of 1889, he joined the Harvard Summer School of Geology which was held in part in his native Genesee Valley and later at Catskill and in the lower Connecticut Valley. Under master teachers he learned the exact methods of stratigraphic geological field work.
In 1891 he resigned his pastorate in order to study geology in the Harvard Graduate School, and upon his graduation with the degree of A. M.
In 1885 Albert Brigham moved to Utica, where he was pastor of the Tabernacle Church for six years.
In 1892 he was called by his alma mater to become the head of the multiple department of natural history, zoology, geology, paleontology, and physiography. By his own teaching and example and through the men he called for special work he made the science departments a vital part of the university.
He retired in 1925 after thirty-three years of service with a world-wide reputation as a scientist, teacher, and leader.
From 1929 until shortly before his death in 1932 he was honorary consultant in geography in the Library of Congress and spent about half of each year in that service.
In 1927 he published The United States of America, based on a series of lectures delivered at the University of London, and containing studies in physical, regional, industrial, and human geography. Throughout his life Brigham retained a scientific interest in the Mohawk Valley and his studies in this field culminated in The Glacial Geology and Geographic Conditions of the Lower Mohawk Valley (1929).
On the organization of the Association of American Geographers in 1904, Brigham was elected secretary. For nine years he guided the destiny of the new association, helping to find a common bond of interest among the many workers in scattered fields all dealing with some phase of geography. He was treasurer of the association for three years and president in 1914. He afterwards served three years in the council.
In 1912 he carried a large part of the detailed work in managing the transcontinental excursion conducted by the American Geographical Society of New York under the leadership of Prof. William Morris Davis. This excursion included more than forty geographers from Europe.
He made many trips to Europe, four times to conduct summer classes at Oxford University.
He taught in the summer sessions of the University of Wisconsin, the University of London, Harvard, and Cornell, in the latter two for four years each. For many years he was chief examiner in geography for the College Entrance Examination Board and the University of the State of New York.
In the last months of his life he suffered ill health and died following a serious operation.
Brigham's contributions to geology and geography were so numerous and so varied in type that they can be but briefly noted. His first geological paper was "The Geology of Oneida County, " which appeared in the Transactions of the Oneida Historical Society, 1887-89 (1889). This was followed in 1903 by Geographic Influences in American History, described as one of "the notable contributions to the geographic interpretation of history". Brigham also edited the memorial volume (Memorial Volume of the Transcontinental Excursion of 1912 , 1915). As a popularizer of geology and geography in the United States, he was much in demand as a lecturer before educational and scientific meetings. His textbooks for secondary and elementary schools made him widely known, and his several volumes for adults contributed greatly to a public interest in geography. He was also delegate from the United States to the centenary of the Royal Geographical Society of London. From 1879 to 1882 he was a student at the Hamilton Theological Seminary, and in the latter year he was ordained to the Baptist ministry and accepted a pastorate in Stillwater, New York.
His concept of geography was broad and yet definite, but his point of view was essentially that of a humanist. He became increasingly concerned with man's relation to the earth. His early training in the classics gave him a background for accurate and clear-cut expression.
He was a member of the Association of American Geographers, of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and of the Royal Geographical Society of London.
Brigham was married, on June 27, 1882, to Flora Winegar of Amsterdam, New York. They had two children, Charles and Elizabeth.
In 1900 he published A Text Book of Geology and in 1902, in association with Grove Karl Gilbert, An Introduction to Physical Geography.
