From 1914 worked at Simsk Plant, Southern Urals. April 1917 Simsk Russian Social-Democratic Workers’ Party organisation deleg at All-Ural Party Conference. 1917 worked in Ufa; formed battle squad, which he led in fighting for Orenburg.
Twice wounded; fall 1918 his detachment was expanded into a regt, which he commanded in the storming of Izhevsk. Seriously wounded; after convalescence given staff duties with 5th Army and Eastern Front, organizing grain collection in Ufa Province and crushing peasant revolts in Southern Urals. 1920-1921 military comissar of brigade in Dag and Transcaucasia.
