He graduated from the Faculty of History of Voronezh State University (1977).
In 1977-1978, he was a teacher of secondary school in the Sverdlovsk region, in 1978-1979 - a research scientist of the State Archives of the Voronezh Region, in 1979-1984 - a research scientist at the Voronezh Special Scientific and Restoration Manufactory. Since 1987 he was the teacher, since 1992 - associate professor, since 2007 - Professor of the Department of History of Russia of the Voronezh State University. He was the member of the City Commission for Historical and Cultural Heritage (1984), member of the Russian Genealogical Society (1995), member of the Organization of Russian Bibliophiles, deputy chairman of the Voronezh Historical and Cultural Society (1991).
Akinshin Alexander Nikolaevich is a candidate of historical sciences (1987), associate professor (1993).
