He graduated from the Moscow Medical School (1959), The Boris Shchukin Theatre Institute (1965, the course of V.K. Lvova).
In 1965-1993 he worked in various Moscow theaters. In 1993 he organized the theater "Et Cetera".n 1996 he was elected the Head of the Union of Theatrical Figures of Russia, and in 2003 he joined the United Russia party.
Kalyagin played his first leading role in 'A Man Before His Time' (1971), an adaptation of the eponymous play by Maxim Gorky by director Abram Room. His popular works as a comedian were in 'Chyorny Prints' (1973) and 'Zdravstvuyte, ya vasha tyotya!' (1975), a TV adaptation of 'Charley's Aunt'. The latter became a very popular cult film among Russian intellectuals, due to the stellar cast, brilliant script, and clever direction by Viktor Titov. Kalyagin's superb acting in the role of 'Barbs Baberley' was highlighted with many interesting allusions and hints.
Kalyagin is best known for the leading role of 'Platonov' in 'Neokonchennaya pyesa dlya mekhanicheskogo pianino' (1977), directed by Nikita Mikhalkov.
Despite being mostly a comedian actor, Alexander Kalyagin can be characterised as a closed person with his own world, to which very few are allowed.
He had a wife,who died and he was left with a little daughter. Now he is married, has a daughter and a son.
