Alexander Nikolaevich Andreev was a Russian art historian, poet, novelist, translator and an author of famous Gypsy songs an romances. He was an author and an editor of multiple catalogues and History of Art books. During his trips to Europe he wrote articles and reviews, collected materials about artists. The compilations of his works on the history of art historians contributed to the promotion of Western European art in Russia.

Alexander Nikolaevich Andreev was born on February 18, 1830 in Pskov, Russian Federation in a noble family. His father was Nikolaj Ivanovich Andreev, a captain, an adjutant, the regimental commander and a memoirist who served in the Patriotic War of 1812. His mother was Nadezhda Nikolaevna Chihaeva.

Alexander Nikolaevich studied at Pskov Gymnasium.
Career
After his graduation Alexander Nikolaevich served in the fourth Moscow Region of the Highways Department. Starting from 1876 he started translating and sometimes changing comedies trying to adjust them for Russian audience. In 1877 he retired.
Alexander Nikolaevich wrote multiple catalogues and handbooks. He also edited "Art galleries of Europe". He wrote a book about cultural events of the 1840s and 1980s later in life.
